Upper Lachlan – The Shire of Villages

Beautiful vistas, quiet country roads, stunning architecture and old fashioned hospitality are just some of the things you will enjoy in the Upper Lachlan Shire, high on the great diving range in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales. Despite being under an hour from Canberra and only two and a half hours from Sydney, the shire has remained largely untouched by the rat race yet is a network of thriving country townships in the heart of a pioneering pastoral district.

Travellers come to the shire for different reasons, some are beating a different path home, some are exploring unknown parts whilst others come for the history, culture, vistas or events. Events such as the Collector Pumpkin Festival, Crookwell Potato Festival, Gunning Fireworks, Taralga Heritage Rally and Binda Picnic Races bring thousands of people every year whilst the picturesque country roads attract classic and vintage car groups, motorcyclists and wandering travellers all year round.

Relive Australia’s gold rush period through the historic villages, museums and natural wonders along The Gold Trail which takes in many of the bushranging districts of the shire including Gunning, Collector, Crookwell and Tuena. Taralga in the east was first opened up for grazing by the Macarthur family and has a rich agricultural history as does the whole region.
